Some vehicles are built for speed. Some are built for comfort. And some are built in bright pink plastic, with two small wheels at the front, two at the back and a driver who is maybe four years old. This clip is about the third kind, and it might be the most fun motorsport we have seen all year.
The track is a huge green lawn, the kind of garden that seems to go on forever, with old trees standing around like spectators. The pink jeep comes rolling in, and at first everything looks calm. A gentle Sunday drive, you think. A little tour around the flower beds. Then the driver discovers the full power of her electric engine.
Suddenly the jeep is flying. Well, rolling quite fast, but in toy car terms this is a world record. The grass bends, the wheels bounce over every bump, and somewhere behind the camera an adult begins to realise that keeping up is going to be a problem.
This is the part every parent will recognise. You buy the toy car thinking it will crawl along at walking speed. You imagine relaxing on a garden chair while the little one does slow circles. Instead you end up jogging across the lawn with a remote control in one hand and your sunglasses slipping off your nose.
The driver, of course, is completely unbothered. She does not wave, she does not slow down and she definitely does not look back. Her eyes are on the horizon, her hands are on the wheel and her mission is clear: reach the end of the garden before anybody can stop her.
We love how simple this joy is. No screens, no complicated rules, just sunshine, grass and a pink jeep pushed to its absolute limits. Somewhere a racing team is probably taking notes on her driving line.
If there was a garden grand prix, this little racer would already have a sponsor. Pink helmet, pink trophy, maybe a small bottle of apple juice to spray on the podium.
So tell us: who do you think wins the race, the toy jeep or the grown-up escort? Judging by this clip, the grown-up needs a bicycle, and possibly a nap.
Don’t stop, friend, keep surfing!
